TGN: Drew, how did you get into riding dirt bikes?

Well, when I was really young I just saw it on TV and stuff and kind of begged my parents for a few years to get into it. Then when I was ten-years-old, it was when they bought me my first bike. Ever since then, I’ve just ridden up in the trails, just through Winfield. Eventually I met up with … well, Rick Heddle was probably one of the first guys I met up with on the hills. Then I met up with Kris Garwasiuk. Then I just started riding with him, he was a good rider and I just tagged along with him and got better and better.

Did you do much racing?

Just trail riding and building jumps in the trails. Then when I got a little older I did some racing just to get better my bike skills. Yeah, so I just did racing off and on.

How did you get into the freestyle side of the sport?

Just from hanging out with those guys. We would always go build jumps in the trails; I just love jumping. So when freestyle took off as a sport and some of those guys got into it, I was like, ‘That’s pretty sweet; I want to get into it.’

I’ve seen some pretty cool photos from the riding areas in BC.

Oh yeah. There are lots of good spots to ride in BC. It’s kind of unfortunate because we have so many good spots, but people keep trying to shut us down wherever we go.

So you’ve participated in many freestyle competitions?

Oh, yeah. Every year I do a shows all over Canada. I do lots of the same ones as Reagan [Sieg] and Kris do, like the Calgary Stampede, demos in Saskatchewan, and last year I went to the states with Reagan and did an IFMA.

What are your plans for this summer?

Just to keep doing shows, stay healthy. I have my foam pit, so Reagan and I will be working on backflips.

What are some your favourite tricks to perform?

Probably one of my favourites is the dead body, and another one I just learned last fall is the sideshow. I’m making that my signature.

You’ll need to get out to the Montreal SX with your buddy, Reagan.

I’ve been wanting to get out there. Well, Kawasaki has been involved with Wakestock for the past few years. I was trying to get into that last year, but he just didn’t have the budget to get another person out there. But yeah, I would like to go to the Montreal SX. Maybe this year I will get there.

Great, thanks, Drew. Good luck this year.

Thanks.
